Food trucks are booming and feature tons of indulgent creations, but what if you want to put together a smart meal that won’t break the calorie bank? Here are a few tricks to help you along.

Scan the row.

If you’re in a location with a bunch of food trucks, take a lap and check out your options. Not only will you get a better sense of what’s available, but a little extra walking never hurt.

Look for lean proteins.

Chicken breast, fish, shrimp, and tofu are top picks. Also seek out proteins that are grilled as opposed to fried. (Slightly obvious advice, but worth pointing out!) If you can’t tell from the description how the protein is prepared, just ask. The good news about food trucks is that the answer is never far away!

Play it smart with condiments.

Mayos, aiolis, cheese sauces… Those will just weigh down your meal (and YOU). But there are plenty of cool toppers that are completely guilt-free. Look for kimchi, hot sauce, homemade salsa, fancy mustards, and pickled veggies. Yum!

Taco trucks = Your main squeeze.

Old-school street-taco trucks tend to offer classic picks that aren’t overloaded with toppings, unlike the heavy taco platters you find at chain restaurants. Chicken + corn tortillas + chopped onion + cilantro + salsa = perfect. Wanna cut down on carbs? Take the filling from two tacos and load it into one tortilla.

Dessert truck super find.

Paletas (Latin American ice pops) are mega trendy right now. These popsicle-like treats are going to be a lower-calorie option than, say, ice cream sandwiched between funnel cakes. When in doubt, keep your sweet treats petite!

‘Til next time… Chew the right thing!
